A New Record for the Largest Unclaimed Jackpot Has Been Set In Canada at $50 Million

OK, this post is not exactly about online gambling in Canada per se. It is however, about one of the only provincial lottery companies that does operate a full online casino in Canada. And anyway, we think it’s pretty cool news regardless. We have all dreamt of that big lottery win right? That multi-million dollar jackpot that changes the life of ourselves and our families forever. So imagine how crazy it is to hear that Lotto Max, operated by OLG in Ontario, has just walked off with an additional $50 million in revenue, as nobody claimed a lottery jackpot of the same value for a year!

The way that OLG works, with Lotto Max, is that if a jackpot goes unclaimed for a year or more, then it is lost, and this is exactly what happened. Somebody won the jackpot of $50 million on the 30th of November 2012. And as they have not come forward to claim this jackpot in a year, they no longer can! How crazy is that? $50 million gone, and nobody claimed it! The largest forfeited lottery jackpot in Canadian history.

Now what we find really cruel about this is that the gambling regulator in Ontario knows the exact location in Cambridge where the ticket was purchased. But it absolutely refuses to tell the public where this location is! Why? What’s the reasoning behind this? Madness!

Lotto Max and OLG have not commented on exactly what will happen to this $50 million in unclaimed lottery jackpot winnings. In theory, it can just be returned back to the company. However, considering that it must have already been budgeted as an outgoing, and in face of public criticism for not assisting more in finding the winner, it is likely that OLG will donate at least some of the funds to charity.

There is a lesson for us all here though, and that is to always make sure we keep track of our wagers, be them at an online casino, at a sports betting site, or even the local provincial lottery. We would all think it impossible that somebody could forget to claim a $50 million lottery win right? But it has happened, and it has been forgotten about for over a year.
