Can the Canadian Online Gambling Market Survive Recent Events in both Canada and the USA?
The last few weeks of 2013 were an absolute disaster for the online gambling industry in Canada and many Canadian online gamblers have been scratching their heads, wondering if online casino sites and online gambling in Canada can survive.
With the likes of payment processor giant Skrill pulling out of Canada, as well as several major online casino site including InterPoker and a massive affiliate network as well, things are not looking good. Skrill alone would have been bad enough, as Skrill has been the preferred payment gateway for Canadian online gamblers for a long time, ever since PayPal stopped accepting online gambling related payments.
Of course, there are still some fully legal online gambling options in Canada. But the problem with these is, well, quite frankly, most of these such big time. These are either locally operated online casio sites run by provincial lotteries, with are no more than an online lottery site with a few online casino games add, or local online casino sites run by aboriginal tribes, and again, these are small fry compared to the big international online gambling sites, and do not offer a playing experience of the same quality.
Now consider that the USA is making inroads in to full legalizing online gambling. New Jersey already has legal online casino play, Delaware and Nevada will be next, and how knows how many more states in the coming year? Many Canadian online gamblers will no doubt shift over to these online casino sites soon enough.
The real problem is, that Canada is losing on potentially billions of dollars of online gambling tax revenue. The USA almost completely wiped out online gambling two years ago. It soon changed its mind when it saw how much money the industry is worth.
You know something is dreadfully wrong when a major international company such as Skrill decides it is too difficult to continue doing business in a major western nation, something terribly wrong indeed. The Canadian government needs to wake up and smell the ashes, the ashes of a potential local market that could add considerable tax revenues to the countries coffers.
Canadian online gamblers are still worse off than almost every other country in the western hemisphere. An absolutely ridiculous situation that needs to be addressed, and addressed soon, before there is no possibility of turning the situation around.
