Canadian Negreanu In Poker Hall Of Fame

Daniel Negreanu, the Canadian poker professional who lives in Las Vegas, was inducted as the 47th member of the Poker Hall of Fame on Sunday November 9. At the age of 40 he became the youngest poker player to receive this honour. It has been said that he could have become a Poker Hall of Famer earlier, but for the minimum age limit of 40 imposed in 2011.

The induction ceremony took place in Binion’s Gambling Hall in Las Vegas on the eve of the WSOP Main Event November Nine final table. Negreanu, who is a brand ambassador of PokerStars, owned by the Canadian firm Amaya, was voted in by 41 member jury after being shortlisted on the basis of public voting. The jury consisted of 20 members from the media and the 21 living Hall of Fame members. Jack McClelland was inducted as the 48th member for decades of services in managing live poker tournaments and poker rooms.

After the induction ceremony, Negreanu said that he has won several tournaments and player of the year awards and that these wins were fabulous. But there is no feeling like being invited to the Hall of Fame. Negreanu said that he is in the best of physical and mental health and has everything to look forward to. Poker Kid, as Negreanu is known in the industry, has always had a sharp tongue and has rubbed many people the wrong way. So he cheekily added, “Once you’re in the Hall of Fame they can’t kick you out!”

Negreanu has the perfect curriculum vitae for being inducted into the Hall of Fame. He has more than 35 tournament wins and almost 250 live tournament cashes. He has almost $30 million in live tournament winnings, which is over $3 million more than his nearest rival. He has the largest single cash in the history of poker, which was $8,288,001 in the $1 million buy in WSOP ‘Big One for One Drop’ in June 2014. He has six cashes of more than $1 million, which is more than any other player. He has won six WSOP bracelets, including APAC Main Event winner, Negreanu is the only poker pro to have won the WSOP Player of the Year award twice.

Negreanu was born in Toronto in 1974. His parents had emigrated from Romania. From the young age of four, Negreanu dreamt of being rich. He dropped out of high school to gamble wherever he could. At the age of 22 he went to Las Vegas to fulfill his dream of becoming a professional poker player. The rest is history.
