Simple Jacks Or Better Video Poker Strategy
Jacks or Better is the most common variant of online video poker. The video poker variant is so named because the pay table begins with a pair of jacks or a higher pair. It is available at all online casinos powered by all software providers like Microgaming and Playtech. It is best if you master this game first before moving onto other online video poker variants. This article explains a simple Jacks or Better strategy. This strategy will give you average return to player of about 99.45%. The optimum video poker strategy is considerably more complex and increases the average return by about 1%.
The first step is to hold all cards that make winning combinations. You never to break a winning hand except in two cases. You should be very clear as to what these two cases are. The first exception is when you hold four cards to a royal flush. Then you discard the fifth card, whatever it may be. You do this even if the fifth card contributes to a winning combination like a flush, straight or straight flush. The second exception is that you hold four cards to a straight flush even if you have to break a jacks or better pair.
In the second step you check if you hold three cards to a royal flush. If you hold these cards to a royal flush along with a winning combination, then you should hold the winning combination. For example if the dealt cards are three, ten, Jack and Queen of hearts and Queen of spades then hold the two Queens and discard the remaining cards. If you hold three cards to a royal flush without any winning combination, then he should hold the three cards to a royal flush and discard the remaining two.
The more complicated is the third step where your dealt cards do not make any winning combination. These hands are also referred to as unmade hands. With such hands you should hold cards to make the following combinations in descending order: four to a royal flush, four to a straight flush, three to a royal flush, four to of flush, low pairs (tens or lower), four to a straight, three to a straight flush, two to a royal flush, two unpaired cards higher than Jack and one card higher than Jack. If none of these combinations can be made then you should exchange all five cards.
