Skrill the Second Largest Payment Gateway in the World Has Said That It Is Pulling Out Of Canada
Just two or three years ago, when a Canadian online gambler wanted to make a deposit into their online gambling account, or withdraw winnings from an online casino, they would almost always use PayPal. Then suddenly, PayPal decided that online gambling wasn’t a good market to be in, and banned online casino sites from offering PayPal as a payment gateway. At the time, the second largest payment gateway was Moneybookers, and many online gamblers switched to this option. Last year, Moneybookers was rebranded as Skrill. Same service, new name, simpler to use website. Everything was rosy.
However, we have recently heard that Skrill is now going to be pulling out of the Canadian online gambling market entirely come January. We briefly covered this as part of a previous post, but feel it is worthy of a news entry all of its own, as this could well leave many Canadian online gamblers high and dry without a decent payment gateway to use.
There are two very important dates that Canadian online gamblers who rely upon the Skrill payment gateway to fund and withdraw from their online gambling accounts need to be aware of. The first of these dates is the 2nd of January 2014. On this date, Skrill will stop handling payments made to online casino sites operating in Canada. This means that Canadian online gamblers will no longer be able to send money to an online casino using Skrill.
The second important date is the 31st of January 2014. On this date, Skrill will stop allowing payments to be made from online casino sites operating in Canada to Canadian online gamblers. This means that Canadian players will no longer be able to make a withdrawal using Skrill.
Skrill has issued a statement that tells online gamblers in Canada to, “liaise with appropriate departments within your business to communicate this development and to articulate any impact across your organisation”.
So, to summarize the situation, on the 2nd of January, Canadian online gamblers will no longer be able to fund an online casino account using Skrill as a payment gateway. And then on the 31st of January, Canadian online gamblers will no longer be able to withdraw funds form their online gambling account using Skrill. Not a nice situation, but one that we are going to have to learn to live with.
